# Ingredients:

→ Dry Ingredients

01 - ¼ teaspoon salt
02 - ¼ teaspoon baking soda
03 - 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
04 - ¼ cup sugar
05 - 2 cups plain flour

→ Wet Ingredients

06 - ¾ cup buttermilk
07 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
08 - ½ cup cold butter, unsalted

→ Mix-ins and Topping

09 - Extra milk to brush on top
10 - Sugar for sprinkling
11 - 1 cup dark chocolate chunks

# Instructions:

01 - Set your oven to 400°F to preheat.
02 - In a big bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
03 - Use a cheese grater to shred the cold butter, then combine it with the flour using a pastry blender until it looks crumbly.
04 - Stir in the chocolate chunks to the dry mix.
05 - Mix the vanilla with the buttermilk, then gently stir this into the dry components. Be careful not to mix too much.
06 - Put dough onto a floured surface, press it lightly, and form a circle about 1½ inches thick. Slice into 8 to 10 triangles.
07 - Move the triangles to a tray lined with parchment. Brush with milk, then sprinkle with sugar.
08 - Cook in the oven for 20 to 22 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Let them cool on a rack.

# Notes:

01 - Baking powder works best if it's fresh—less than a year old.
02 - Butter straight from the fridge or even frozen gives great results.
03 - Stir just until everything comes together so your scones stay soft.
