In a big bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Use a cheese grater to shred the cold butter, then combine it with the flour using a pastry blender until it looks crumbly.

Stir in the chocolate chunks to the dry mix.

Mix the vanilla with the buttermilk, then gently stir this into the dry components. Be careful not to mix too much.

Put dough onto a floured surface, press it lightly, and form a circle about 1½ inches thick. Slice into 8 to 10 triangles.
