Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or nonstick cooking spray and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, use a hand mixer on high speed to cream the butter, vegetable oil, and sugar together until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat on low speed until combined.

Add the cake flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure all ingredients are incorporated.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and cool completely in the pans on a wire rack.

Frost between the layers as you stack the cakes, then frost and decorate the top and sides to finish.
